Hlengani Mathebula is the Chairman of BBEC (Black Business Executive Circle) and former Managing Executive for ABSA Private Bank. He was recently appointed as Chief Advisor to Gill Marcus, Governor of the South African Reserve Bank. Hlengani has 13 years' experience in the banking sector, including seven at executive level. He joined ABSA Private Bank as GM in July 2005 following ABSA Bank's acquisition by Barclays. Before that, from 2002-2005, Mathebula was FNB Personal Banking CEO. He was also National Director of government business at FNB Corporate.
Hlengani's chairmanships include those of the North West Growth Fund and the African Leadership Group. A former petrol attendant, he holds a BA and a BTh Hons from the University of the North. He attended the senior executive programme at Harvard Business School, a management development programme at Stellenbosch University, and the marketing management programme at RAU. He enjoys going to game reserves, travelling, soccer and golf.
